When I wake in the morning, I discover a scrawled message on the top sheet of my To-do List notepad that lies in the center of my kitchen table—the same kitchen table that was defiled on Friday night.

A hot flush spreads over my cheeks, and I curl my fingers into fists, attempting to snuff out the flame of hope that this note is from a certain man.

The slight slant to the masculine handwriting holds a perfunctory quality, but the message itself leaves me with no question as to who it’s from.
